MISSOURI ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

Myths vs. Facts

Straight answers to common Guard questions.

MYTH VS. FACT

Questions students actually ask.

Do I have to move away?

Guard service is normally tied to a unit, allowing many Soldiers to live, work, and attend school in their home state. Training and military missions can require travel.

Is it really only one weekend a month and two weeks a year?

That phrase is a common baseline description, but actual requirements can vary by unit, training, schools, missions, and activation.

Can I go to college while serving?

Many Soldiers do. Military training and service obligations still have to be planned around school.

Can I pick my job?

You can choose from jobs for which you qualify that are available when you enlist.

Will I deploy?

Deployment or activation is possible. Nobody should join based on a promise that they will never deploy.

What if I’m still in high school?

There are pathways for eligible students, with additional rules for minors and training timing.

Does the Guard automatically pay 100% of any college?

No. Education assistance depends on the benefit, eligibility, school, tuition, funding, and current rules.

What if I have medical or legal history?

Tell the recruiter. Some issues are disqualifying, some may be reviewable, and some may require documentation or a waiver. Hiding information creates bigger problems.

MORE QUESTIONS

Straight answers.

Can I choose my job?

You choose from jobs you qualify for that have an available vacancy. ASVAB/line scores, medical qualification, unit vacancies and training availability matter.

Is it really one weekend a month and two weeks a year?

That is a common baseline. Schools, longer annual training, activations, deployments and unit requirements can add duty.

Can I deploy?

Yes. National Guard Soldiers can be activated for state missions and can deploy for federal missions.

Can I go to college full-time?

Many Guard Soldiers do. You still have to plan around drill, annual training, military schools and possible activations.

Are education benefits automatic?

No. Eligibility, contract terms, enrollment, service status, funding and deadlines can matter.

What is RSP?

The Recruit Sustainment Program prepares new Soldiers for Basic Training while they wait to ship, and RSP drill is paid.

What happens at MEPS?

MEPS is part of the official qualification and enlistment process and includes required medical and administrative processing.

Can my parents be involved?

Yes. Parent questions are welcome, and parental consent requirements apply to 17-year-old applicants.

Do I have to commit just to talk to you?

No. Asking questions or meeting with me is not an enlistment contract.
